Overnight Vision correction with Contact Lenses – Without Laser Surgery

Jacksons Opticians are pleased to bring Orthokeratology (Overnight Vision Correction) Contact Lenses to Glossop. As part of our committment to provide the best eyecare possible we use a corneal topographer for accurate mapping of the cornea.

If you are a glasses or contact lens wearer – Imagine waking up in the morning and being able to see without the need for spectacles or contact lenses.

What is Ortho-k?

Orthokeratology or ortho-k (corneal re-shaping or overnight vision correction) is the use of specially designed rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses to gently alter the shape of the cornea (the transparent front part of the eye) in order to correct low to moderate levels of short sight.

Orthokeratology lenses are worn nightly and removed in the morning. The aim is to correct vision without the need for spectacles or contact lenses during the day. Because the effects on the surface of the eye are temporary, the eyes will return to their original shape and prescription if the lenses are not worn for a few days.

The main advantage is that contact lenses are not worn during the day, which is particularly useful for some activities, such as water or contact sports. Athletes in particular benefit from not having to wear any sort of corrective eyewear.

Ortho-k can also help with patients who have encountered dry or irritated eyes wearing normal contact lenses. For sensitive make-up wearers this can prove invaluable. As the lenses are worn at night and not during the day the irritation is removed.

How long does the effect last?

Some people can have excellent vision after only one or two nights of overnight ortho-k wearing. For higher prescriptions it can take two weeks or longer to achieve maximum correction.

It is possible to see both with and without the lenses so they correct vision day and night. You should be able to see acceptably well without your glasses or contact lenses for a day or two, sometimes longer. For best results, you should wear the ortho-k lenses every night.

Who will it work for?

Ortho-k works best for prescriptions up to -6.00D of short sight with no more than -1.75D of astigmatism and long sighted prescriptions of up to +3.00. Once you reach about 45 years of age and need multifocal or reading glasses having ortho-k lenses can give you the same corrected effect. Distance vision above and reading below.

Orthokeratology can also slow the progression of short sight in children meaning that they may never reach the high prescription they were destined for, working in a similar way to dental braces. Good candidates are aged 8-12 with progressive or worsening short sight (myopia). If children are fitted with Ortho-k lenses, parental involvement and monitoring of hygiene and care is essential.

Fitting takes the form of an initial consultation with fitting appointments to follow. Regular aftercare examinations (ideally at least every six months) are required after the fitting is completed, including assessment of the condition of the contact lens and the lens case.
